heart internet

i learned today that if you try to type "<3" in your page title, blogger will think you are doing html and get mad at you.

_a conversation between jia tolentino and doreen st. felix about jia's trick mirror: "it's a special thing to write in private and ... there's a thing today where every single bit of labor has to be publicized and monetized" (3:55, jt) / "i wanted to make sure the internet isn't ruining my writing the way it's ruining my brain" (4:10, jt) / "the very best is always private" (5:00, jt) / "we're inclined to smooth out narratives" (11:20, jt) / "that impulse ... that i wanted something bigger to happen so that i would have proof of this problem that i knew was everywhere" (20:40, jt) / "writing against conclusions" (28:50, dsf) / "there's a kind of writing that proliferates online that's actually more like speech" (29:00, dsf) / "the internet's magnification of personality as a stand-in for what's actually happening (32:30, jt) / [of writing] "what you can control is the amount of pleasure that you can generate for yourself within your work" "if you can make your writing fun and hard enough for yourself in such a way where even if nothing comes of it, it be worthwhile to have done it, it'll probably be the thing that makes you write well" (40:22, jt) / "it's worth holding onto something for as long as you can" (43:30, jt). she of course also mentions jenny odell's how to do nothing.

_an illustrated diagram of the internet ("the dark and cosy web") by maggie appleton. explores layers of the "clear web" (social media, the modern experience of the internet, websites, profiles, ads), sorta alludes to blogs but not really (closest thing is email newsletters and rss feeds - what is an rss feed??), digital gardens (personal wikis/growing knowledge webs), cosy web aka community spaces, also the dark web/chans etc.

_and an interesting article also by maggie appleton hypothesizing what's to come in the era of generative AI (how do we pass the reverse turing test aka prove that we are human? maggie suggests such solutions as: demonstrating evidence of reasoning and a consistent, stable voice; critical thinking; and developing creative uses of language/illogical internetspeak and novel dialects.)

_the fall of blogging / the rise of the personal tiny directory (hyperlinks????) according again to kickscondor including a nod to geocities, precursor to neocities (see second screenshot):
